Officially the second best U14 Team in Scotland!!
Inverleith's Mixed U14 team made it through to the Final of the Scottish U14 Cup at Peffermill on Sunday, losing narrowly to a strong Kelburne side who retained the trophy for the third consecutive year.
Drawn in Group B with Clydesdale and Blairgowrie High School, the team got off to a solid start with a 1-1 draw against Clydesdale, coming back well after some slightly hesitant defending allowed Clydesdale to take the lead. A much better performance in the second half, and a goal from Lucy R earned the team the draw. The second game against an all-boy Blairgowrie HS side was more comfortable, and turned into the Lucy Robinson show, with Lucy getting 5 of the goals in a 7-0 victory. The other goals came from our two 11-year olds, Joe Waterson and Laura Swanson. We had to play both teams twice, and in the second game against Clydesdale we again managed to go a goal behind, before a stunning second half performance saw us end up winning 3-1, the goals again coming from Joe Waterson with 1, and Laura Swanson with 2. A final 6-0 victory against Blairgowrie, with a hat-trick from Stuart Hatton, another 2 from Lucy Robinson and 1 from Joe W meant that we finished top of the group and set us up for a semi-final against our fellow East District representatives Watsonians. We took an early 2 goal lead through Lucy Robinson and Sarah Laverty, before allowing Watsonians to pull one back in the second half. Some gritty defending allowed us to see out the game and book our place in the final against Kelburne.
The team played incredibly well in the final against a very tough and skilful Kelburne side. We defended heroically, and certainly matched them for skill and effort, but just couldn't create enough chances to really threaten their goal, while they were able to take just one of the few chances they did create to record the narrowest of victories.
